A Problem Worth Solving…

Today, the threat of random violence/ mass shooting incidents against the general population looms greater than ever.  As these incidents become increasingly more common, the need for our businesses, schools, places of worship and institutions to have fully prepared, integrated responses increases with every tragic headline.

At East Wind Consulting, our goal is to assist our customers in preparing for these incidents through on-going education, training, physical security assessments, and testing designed to help our customers prevent attacks whenever possible and to mitigate casualties in the event that an attack occurs.

Who We Are…

East Wind Consulting was started in 2022 by former law enforcement officer, trainer, and active shooter response instructor, Joseph M. Stewart. With roughly a decade and a half of experience in patrol tactics, gang & drug investigations, and law enforcement instruction, Mike was tasked with founding the Reality Based Training program for the Durham Police Department. This position had a single goal; build high intensity, high quality classes designed to sharpen the high-risk skillset of the average officer. From firearms to use-of-force, Mike’s goal was simple… if he could get an officer for a single hour of training, he could send that officer back to the street better and more effective than they were before they walked in.

Mike Stewart, Owner & CEO with his wife Amy and daughter, Autumn.

As this program developed, Mike began focusing on active shooter/mass casualty incidents. The thought process was simple; If he could prepare them for the worst, they could easily scale down for the rest. With that in mind, Mike began studying every element of the active shooter phenomenon and began to see practical elements common to all shootings. He realized that taking down the bad-guy, though crucial, was only the first element of completing the overall goal: Saving Lives. As such, he began to focus efforts on developing training designed to fill in the missing elements, all while not loosing focus on stopping the threat.

As this grew, he expanded relationships with other first responder agencies such as Fire, EMS, etc, even building partnerships with major local business and schools to plan major training events aimed at not only training individual officers & first responder disciplines, but grow inter-agency cooperation as well.

Years later, East Wind Consulting was born. Mike’s goal still stands; with every interaction we have with a client, we want to leave that client more prepared than they were before we arrived. We operate with the idea that if various disciplines with the First Responder community could collaborate with a business to plan a full scale training scenario and response, they could pre-plan the core elements of an actual response, in conjunction with a client, before the need arose.

Simply put, by saving time, we are saving lives.

At East Wind Consulting, we realize that you cannot survive a mass casualty incident by leaving the responsibility of your survival up to the Police. Make no mistake, they will play an integral role in your outcome, but your survival, and that of those under your care is up to you. The outcome of your incident will have more to do with how you plan, train, test, and prepare than who is coming to help. We don’t want to just improve your plan… we want to turn your plan into an element of The Plan; A coordinated response built in conjunction with you, your community, and the men & women coming to help.

Active Shooter isn’t a THEY problem, it’s a WE problem and we’ll solve it by working together.
